The end of hostilities brought a renewal of maritime trade and related activity. However, Connecticut’s foreign trade increasingly flowed through New York, and Connecticut shipyards expanded to supply New York’s demand for new ships. Launched at Middletown, Connecticut, in 1816, the brig American was owned in New York and traded to the Mediterranean and South America. Marine artist Antoine Roux painted this watercolor at Marseilles, France, in 1820. (©Mystic Seaport Collection, Mystic, CT, #1953.4558)
